They Say Money Will Not Make You Happy, But It Can Help Make Life Easier

Self-Care can be defined as a process of recognizing one’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs and finding personal and flexible ways of meeting these needs” (Elizabeth Brownlee)

According to the author of “How Counselors View And Practice Self-Care” there are two main barriers to self-care; External Factors (Concerning work and work-related stress) and Internal Factors (The individual’s core beliefs, experiences, personality, etc.)

Obstacles To Self-Care — External Factors

According to the finding by Elizabeth Brownlee Research, money was a huge factor in not practicing self-care. The participants were either too busy making a living or did not have enough money to spare. “Interviewees reportedly felt that often the challenge was to integrate self-care when life was so busy. They felt that practicing self-care seemed much easier at quiet times. Consequently, self-care was often the first activity that was neglected at stressful times”.

Money Huge Obstacle To Self-Care

Money and time can create tremendous obstacles when it comes to self-care. For example, in my work, as a Crisis Interventions Center, most of our clients have one or various forms of mental health disorders or psychosis, and most of them are frequently suicidal. They all come from different walks of life. I like to emphasize that mental health/illness has no boundaries, and anyone anywhere can be affected by it. That is why there is a need to raise Self-Care Awareness and break the barriers created by us or our circumstances when it comes to self-care.

This Crisis Intervention Center has one of the highest employee turnover rates of its kind. Out of the 75 or so employees, less than 25% of them have been working for 5 years or more. You might be wondering, “Why?” The answer is not straightforward, but lack of a proper ‘Self-Care’ routine is undoubtedly a contributing factor. We are constantly short-staffed and tons of newcomers every two weeks at least. The work can drag us down, and there many people who need our help. So, what do you do? Many of us will tend to work overtime, which comes with extra pay (very appealing), but we get burned out without realizing it.

Preachers Who Do Not Listen To Their Own Sermons

We preach to others how to take care of themselves, yet we perceive the same notion as being an act of selfishness or self-indulgence in ourselves. Mainly based on such concepts as “loving your neighbors” or “be compassionate towards others,” but these quotes are incomplete. For example, loving your neighbors as you love yourself because, in all honesty, we can never render to others what do not have. You may have humanitarians or philanthropists that you admire for what they have done or what they are doing, but they do not get to where they are and do what they are doing without first of all charging their energy or getting some self-care.

Though it sounds ridiculous, most of them had been selfish before they came selfless because they understood this principle — in order to help others, I must take care of myself first.
