Becoming Who You Are Is A Process – Part 2

A wellness approach to a healthy lifestyle while enjoying the present, and process of becoming who you are

Sometimes we are too afraid to face reality, enjoy the process, or enjoy the present. Instead, we occupy our minds with future delights, numbing any present comfortability we might be experiencing. No one ever said the process would be fun or full of happiness. You must do what you can do while going through the process of “Becoming Who You Are.”

Therefore, it is advisable to incorporate the practice of ‘WELLNESS’ in your daily life. We can be more effective as well as happier if we can learn to enjoy where we are and refresh our body, mind, and spirit.


Wellness Approach To A Healthy Lifestyle — Enjoy The Present, and The Process

Wellness is a conscious, deliberate process that requires a person to become aware of and make choices for a more satisfying lifestyle (Johnson,1986; Swarbrick, 1997). Wellness is the process of creating and adapting patterns of behavior that lead to improved health in the wellness dimensions and heightened life satisfaction (Johnson,1986).

A wellness lifestyle includes a balance of healthy habits such as adequate sleep and rest, productivity, exercise, participation in meaningful activity, nutrition, productivity, social contact, and supportive relationships (Swarbrick, 1997). Wellness is holistic and multi-dimensional and includes physical, emotional, intellectual, social, environmental, and spiritual dimensions. (A Wellness Approach)


My Desire Regarding the Six of Seven Dimensions of the Wellness Model By Margaret (Peggy) Swarbrick

Physical — I would like to work on my physical exercise by running for an hour daily at least, but my target is to run for one and a half hours every day. That is my long-term goal. It is summer, and the weather is perfect for vigorous outdoor exercise. I will start by running for fifteen minutes for the first week and increase 15 minutes each week until I reach my target.

Emotional — Through exercise, I already gain a lot of emotional benefits, but I want to work on this dimension separately. I would like to incorporate meditation and some relaxation techniques during quiet times. According to Roger Wash in Lifestyle and Mental Health“Meditation, relaxation, recreation, and time in nature — are enjoyable and may, therefore, become healthy self-sustaining habits.

Meditation is therapeutic, and its benefits are tremendous concerning many psychological disorders and also as an art of maintaining mental wellness. I will start meditating for ten minutes daily for one week and increase by ten minutes each week, and my final target is eighty minutes of meditation, devotion, and quiet time daily.

Intellectual — Read books for fun. I do not normally read unless I am interested in the topic. I would love to learn a new language. It has been a while since I intentionally decided to learn a new language. Perhaps play more board games, since my family loves playing board games. I like it because it involves critical thinking and analyzing; usually, your mind is busy trying to figure what next move to make.

Social — My social goal is to keep in touch with my friends and extended families. I do not engage in social media outlets very often, so it is hard to keep in constant contact with people. I plan to do this by setting aside one or two hours during the weekends to communicate and connect.

Environment — Walking or hiking in the woods or trails is my go-to for fun. I would like to maintain a routine that helps me to enjoy the environment and nature in spite of my busy schedule. This goal can be tied to the physical goal.

Spiritual — Maintaining a routine for quiet time can be difficult because of the business of modern life, work, school, family, friends, etc. Learning to connect with oneself even in the midst of all the noise is something I would like to start working on.

Intention About This Wellness Project — To be able to maintain wellbeing in all areas of life is vital, and I will recommend you do so, too. Do not be carried away by the cares of this world and forget not to tend to body, mind, and soul. This is just an example for you to create your own. There is never a ‘One Size Fits All’ method for wellness or mental health or life in general. You need to try to find out what works for you.

Let’s keep trying while casting all our cares on him who loves us all.

  2. Most people, when they use the word meditation, refer to it as a process of trying to keep the mind quiet for a specific time. That is the common, traditional usage of that word. You even use the terms of “quiet time” in your spiritual section, but if such quiet time, to you, includes lots of thoughts and thinking, then i may be reading your message wrongly.

    • Yes I don’t mean the eastern form of meditation where you try to empty your mind. But I do think a calm, peaceful, quiet setting is best for some time to reflect. That could be a thankfulness exercise, or thinking of a passage of the Bible or poetry or any number of other things. For some people it may be really quieting the mind if they have a tendency towards anxious thoughts (eastern meditation), but in general I meditate on something specific rather than empty my mind. 😊

  4. I disagree. True meditation is not what merely can be practiced or prearranged to intentionally do at a certain time; if it can be practiced, it is merely part of a calculated thing, which makes it very limited, man-made, and fabricated by thought.

    • It sounds like you might be using the term meditation to mean something different from the standard definition. Mediation is spending time to think about something significant or just being purposeful. The fact that it is planned or timed does not mean you aren’t meditating. I think you may be referring more to a frame of mind? Or I might be reading your message wrong😊😊
