Thai Beef With Broccoli – Hot & Spicy

Weekday dinners are sometimes a hassle, especially if you are trying to build or maintain healthy eating habits. Sometimes you run out of ideas, or /and you just too tired to spend one or two hours in the kitchen. There are days like that if you are married to your kitchen. You just do not feel it or nothing quick and exciting to cook pops up.

I was tired of surfing the internet and decided to go back to a tradition when the internet was not this popular, and there were what we called ‘Cook Books.’ Yesterday happened to be one of those days; I went to the library to search for instructions on quick, healthy, and of course, delicious recipes and look at what I have found.

This recipe caught my attention immediately. I am a lover of Thai food. That is why whenever I am in an unfamiliar place, my safe choice for dinning is always to look for a Thai Restaurant.

The recipe is called ‘Thai Beef With Broccoli.’ with a touch of western influence yet maintaining the Thai flavor. Unfortunately, one of the main ingredients in this was missing, but I tried to make my own version.  “Nam pla is a dark-colored fish sauce that resembles soy sauce in appearance and saltiness. It is an essential flavoring ingredient in Thai Cooking.” (BHG)

  • Ingredients
  • Beef = 1 ½ Pound (you can use any kind of beef) Cut into bite-size strips
  • Broccoli = 2 Heads or 3 (size and shape cut to your preference)
  • Garlic = 6 cloves
  • Cumin = 1 Tbsp 
  • Thyme = ½ Tsp (power)
  • Oregano = 1/2 Tsp (power)
  • Chipotle chili powder = 1/2 Tsp
  • Cayenne Pepper = 1 Tsp
  • Habanero Pepper = 1 (Thai Chills great option)
  • Lemon = 1 Tbsp
  • Black pepper = 1 Tsp
  • Water =  ¼ – ½ cup
  • Corn-Starch = 2 to 3 Tbsp
  • Soy Sauce = 2 to 2 ½ Tbsp
  • Oil = ¼  Cup (or 2 Tbsp)
  • Salt = 1 Tsp (Taste for salt)
  • Scallion / Green Onion = 2 to 3
  • Beef Bouillon = 1 Tsp (Optional)
  • Cabbage = 1 ½ Cups – Shape and size of the slices according to your preference  (Optional)

Cooking Instructions – Cooking Time = 20 to 30 Minutes

  • Heat the skillet to medium-high with 2 tbsp of oil
  •  Stir fry the broccoli for 2 minutes (add a pinch of all the spices for flavor if you want)
  • Remove and set aside

Beef

  • Mix the corn-starch and the beef strips together (different from the original recipe, I just wanted to go a little quick and also give a rich color) But you can fry the beef first separately and blend the ingredients and the corn-starch together.
  • Heat the oil in the skillet and add the beef covered with the corn-starch (This requires high heat for the corn-starch to stick and remain smooth for the sauce
  • Add the garlic, cumin, cardamom, thyme, Chipotle chili powder, Cayenne pepper, habanero pepper and black pepper
  • After 5 minutes add the soy sauce and lemon (also add the Nam Pla, if you have it), then add the beef bouillon or salt to taste
  • Add the broccoli and the cabbage. Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes (I usually like my vegetables looking fresh and crunchy

Side Dish

  • Deep-Fried Wonton Strips
  • I used egg rolls skins instead, and they tasted delicious and compliment the dish well.  I will have to try the wonton someday
  • Cut into strips (I used ¾ of the egg roll package)
  • Fry for 20 seconds or until golden brown
  • White rice

Great recipe, easy, and quick to prepare for weeknights, and a big thank you to ‘Better Homes and Gardens’.
